Internationally renowned electronic musicians composed their 21st century tribute to Walter Ruttmann’s 1927 film classic

SYMPHONY OF NOW is a tribute by director Johannes Schaff and prominent members of Berlin’s electronic music scene to Walter Ruttmann’s classic 1927 documentary BERLIN – DIE SINFONIE DER GROßSTADT. About a century after the premiere of this milestone in film history, SYMPHONY OF NOW celebrates contemporary Berlin—and its status as a leading metropolis of electronic music. Following a brief historical prelude, with the ruins of the Anhalter Bahnhof station serving as the link from Ruttmann's original railway ride into the city to the present, the film flies in a matter of minutes through reminiscences of the Nazi era, war and dictatorship, over the remains of communist East Germany's Plänterwald amusement parc into the brightness of a day in the mid-2010s. Berlin as a place of work plays a secondary role; as early as the 9th minute, visual references to partying begin to appear. Johannes Schaff's focus is, above all, on Berlin as an international mecca for creativity and nightlife. The music in SYMPHONY OF NOW stands on equal footing with the visuals. Frank Wiedemann, internationally renowned and a leading member of Berlin's house and electro music scene, curated the music and collaborated with several other big names in electronic music. Among them are Hans-Joachim Roedelius, an electronic music pioneer living in Austria; Gudrun Gut, an underground music icon and electronic music trailblazer; Samon Kawamura, a German-Japanese artist living in Berlin; as well as Thomas Fehlmann, Modeselektor, and Alex.Do. Wiedemann had previously contributed to a modern musical adaptation of *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari*. *SYMPHONY OF NOW* combines documentary observation, a spirit of audiovisual experimentation, and electronic music to create a modern portrait of this vibrant city.
